Got this thing on my mind about the new video game — Ghost of Yōtei. So, there’s this peek-a-boo trailer thing from Sucker Punch Productions, part of some Sony shindig—okay, State of Play, they call it. Anyway, they’re showing how Atsu (the main character, if you’re wondering) gets to play around with all sorts of sharp stuff while traveling through Ezo. Which used to be, uh, Hokkaido? I think. Geography never was my strong suit.
Remember Ghost of Tsushima? Had this Kurosawa Mode that was like stepping into an old samurai flick. I mean, who doesn’t love a black and white world with scratchy film vibes? Anyway, it’s back. But they’ve got more fancy modes now. There’s this Takashi Miike thing where blood and mud splatter everywhere. Sounds delightful, right? Oh, and something about lo-fi beats for when you’re in a chill mood. Shinichirō Watanabe vibes. Jazz and sword fights. Quite the combo.
Weapons though! They’ve got these dual katanas and stuff like ōdachi and kusarigama — seriously, what are these names? Anyway, Atsu’s switching skills are supposed to be dynamite. It’s all about switching and disarming, meaning you better stay on your toes. If you’re the wandering type, they’ve made it all open-world-y, kinda Elden Ring-ish, they say. Follow animals, find secrets. Do animals actually guide you in real life? I once followed a squirrel and found nothing but a pile of acorns. Go figure.
Oh, and special edition consoles — whoop-de-doo! They’ve got mountain views on them. Controllers with Atsu’s face too. Might look cool on the shelf, I guess.
By the way, it’s not a sequel. More like a distant cousin, 300 years after Ghost of Tsushima kinda cousin. Atsu’s on a good-old-family-revenge trip, targeting the baddies — the Yōtei Six. Player’s choice here, so you can decide who gets the axe first. Or the kusarigama, if we’re staying specific. Choices in a game about samurais and ghosts? Now that’s something.
