If you’re familiar with the British Isles like I am, you might not immediately think of Birmingham as an ideal setting for a video game. But imagine it back in the 14th century, overrun with zombies. Suddenly, it becomes quite intriguing. That’s exactly the twist God Save Birmingham is delivering, and after catching about eight minutes of its new gameplay footage, it’s quickly climbed to the top of my zombie game wishlist.
Typically, I’m drawn to zombie games that thrive on co-op chaos, featuring gigantic hordes and outrageous weaponry. Think Call of Duty Zombies or Dead Island 2. That’s why Killing Floor 3 and the mysteriously silent John Carpenter’s Toxic Commando have been top contenders on my anticipated PC games list. Yet, God Save Birmingham just edged them out.
This game doesn’t fall into the usual co-op horde genre where wielding an electrified baseball bat or a portable jet turbine against zombies is the norm. Although I’ve previously caught glimpses of its gameplay, the new extended trailer from IGN offers a different vibe—think The Last of Us with its third-person stealth and satisfying takedown animations. While I’m unsure if the storyline will pack the same punch, the zombie battles definitely carry that familiar TLOU essence.
A major highlight is interacting with and adapting to your surroundings. You can shift furniture to barricade doors, transform ladders into makeshift bridges, and use chairs to reach otherwise inaccessible ledges. The game showcases realistic physics, applying to both you and the zombies, promising a dynamic sandbox experience.
The latest trailer delves into its robust survival mechanics. You’ll need to manage hunger, thirst, fatigue, and panic levels. Restocking these through your inventory demands real-time decision-making—there’s no pausing to quickly gulp down a loaf of bread. Injuries from falls can slow your pace, objects can be dismantled for materials, and there’s even a detailed cooking system.
I must say, it all looks fantastic, and setting the adventure in medieval times adds a fresh twist to the zombie survival genre. While God Save Birmingham doesn’t have a release date yet, an early access launch is anticipated.
