First Major Update for ‘Orion Drift,’ the Successor to ‘Gorilla Tag,’ Introduces New Mini-Game Tomorrow

The team behind Gorilla Tag, Another Axiom, has exciting news for fans of their recent space station adventure, Orion Drift. The game, which only recently made its debut in early access, is about to receive its first major update. This update introduces a fresh mini-game called ‘Capture the Beacon’ (CTB), adding a new layer of fun to the already expansive gameplay.

‘Capture the Beacon’ puts a spin on the classic capture the flag concept. In this version, players aim to transport a rod-shaped beacon back to their team’s base. What sets this apart is Orion Drift’s lack of limitations on player count or game duration, meaning anyone can join the chaos whenever they please.

While the developers have hinted at “a ton more” arriving with this update, they’re keeping most of those details under wraps for now. We’ll have to wait for the update to go live tomorrow, March 28th at 10 AM PT, to get the full scoop.

Originally launched for free on Quest at the end of February, Orion Drift capitalizes on Gorilla Tag’s unique movement mechanics. Imagine navigating the sprawling space station by physically pumping your arms, launching yourself into action.

Apart from CTB, Orion Drift offers an array of activities for players. Its standout feature, ‘Drift Ball’, is a tribute to the now-discontinued Echo VR sports game. Think of it as a zero-gravity handball match.

Around the space station, you’ll find several other mini-games. These include parkour courses that echo Gorilla Tag’s climbing antics, practice arenas for honing your Drift Ball prowess, plus mini-games like golf and basketball. There’s also a lounge area to relax and watch the action unfold across various arenas.

Currently, Orion Drift can support up to 75 players per server. However, Another Axiom plans to increase this capacity to a staggering 200 in the future. Expanding the selection of mini-games seems to be a step in that direction, setting a course for broader horizons, though the game is still in its early stages.

Despite following in Gorilla Tag’s footsteps by offering immersive, pop-in-out social gaming experiences, Orion Drift hasn’t quite reached the same level of widespread acclaim. As of now, it has gathered around 3,300 user reviews and hasn’t yet cracked into Quest’s top 50 best-selling games list. The current frontrunners are Animal Company, Yeeps, and Gorilla Tag itself.
