Purchasing Skype Credits is Now Discontinued

In a recent shift, Skype has stopped offering Skype Credit for purchase, urging users still on the platform to opt for a subscription if they want to access certain functionalities. Previously, Skype Credit was utilized to make calls to mobile phones and landlines or to send SMS messages. Additionally, it allowed users to buy a Skype Number, an option Microsoft recently discontinued.

Visitors to Skype’s website are now greeted with a banner stating, “Skype Credit is no longer available. For new purchases, check out the monthly subscriptions or make a free Skype call to anyone anytime.” Although Skype’s glory days might be behind it, millions still rely on it. Microsoft has not disclosed how many users are dependent on Skype Credit. However, it seems the company is banking on these users transitioning to a monthly subscription model.

So, what exactly was Skype Credit? Essentially, it allowed you to use paid features on Skype like making calls to mobile numbers or landlines. You could also send text messages and at one point, purchase a Skype Number—with the latter no longer an option.

Wondering if you can still use Skype without Skype Credit? Yes, you can. But for calling phones, you’ll need a monthly subscription. The cost varies by region—for instance, reaching someone in the U.S. will set you back $3.59 per month, whereas calling India is priced at $9.59 monthly.

There’s some uncertainty about the fate of SMS messaging on Skype with this recent change. Previously, Skype Credit allowed users to send SMS texts, but as of now, the website doesn’t clarify if this feature is still supported without mention of Credits.

A spokesperson from Microsoft noted that Skype Numbers won’t be sold anymore, though existing numbers remain valid. They highlighted that Microsoft “continuously evaluates product strategy based on customer usage and needs.”

For those who have already purchased Skype Credit or Skype Numbers, fear not—your credit remains usable as long as you make a transaction every 180 days. Despite the discontinuation of Skype Credit, the platform still offers robust communication options including messaging, voice, and video calls, all thriving without the need for Skype Credit.
