REVIEW / Cube Snake (PC Game)

If you had a Nokia phone during the ’90s, chances are you were hooked on Snake. This simple yet incredibly addictive game was a go-to during the pre-smartphone era, providing endless entertainment on those tiny screens. The concept was straightforward: guide your growing snake to eat as many targets as possible without biting its tail. It’s a formula that has stood the test of time and continues to evoke nostalgia whenever it’s revisited. That nostalgia brings us to Cube Snake, a PC game I’ll be dissecting today.

Now, when it comes to gaming, we often ponder what we’re looking for in a title. This is particularly relevant for Cube Snake, as it demands you align your expectations to appreciate the gameplay. Here, it’s all about understanding what you’re stepping into before hitting that start button.

Cube Snake remains true to its roots. It tasks you with navigating your snake along the floors and two walls of a cube, where your goal is to munch on appearing snacks. Just like the classic Snake, you lose if you crash into your own tail. There’s a twist, though—your progress is tracked by the number of snacks consumed and a fever bar that gradually fills up. Once maxed out, you enter a frenetic ‘fever mode’ where targets pop up all around you, and the game speeds up for a brief and exhilarating period.

While Cube Snake is anchored in simplicity, this is precisely its charm. It’s the kind of game that’s perfect for filling a five-minute break, with its engaging “just one more go” allure. Score chasers will find themselves drawn in, trying to top their previous efforts while taking short, satisfying breaks from daily routines.

In a world where gamers are spoiled for choice with expansive levels and unlockable content, Cube Snake takes a different approach. Those who thrive on unlocking extras or uncovering new levels may find Cube Snake a touch lacking. As someone who appreciates progression, I’d love to see some story elements, levels, or even cosmetics to unlock. Such additions could add an extra layer of motivation to keep coming back for more than just beating a previous score.

This isn’t to say Cube Snake isn’t worth your time. It’s a straightforward offering and that’s not a bad thing. One standout aspect of the game is its price point—a mere £2.49 with a generous 10% off for early birds. At that price, no one can justifiably argue about not getting their money’s worth.

To sum it up, if you’re on the hunt for a game that’s fun, addictively simple, and easy on the wallet, Cube Snake should be on your radar. Its bright and cheerful adaptation of a classic keeps things bug-free with intuitive controls. It’s perfect for anyone who enjoys pick-up-and-play experiences, whether for quick bursts or extended sessions for those who find themselves getting particularly engrossed. For those of us who have fond memories of the original Snake, this is a no-brainer. It’s a solid game all around.

Reintroducing a classic
7/10

In essence, Cube Snake delivers exactly what it promises: a fun and addictive twist on a classic game. If you’re in it for nostalgia, quick play sessions, or just good old score-chasing, you’re in for a treat. Though it might not entice those seeking more extensive content, a few unlockables could enhance its draw for some. However, as it stands, Cube Snake is a worthy homage to Snake, priced fairly for what it offers.
