About a year ago, I started working on a series called 3rd Party 64, focusing on the various Army Men games launched on the Nintendo 64. Right around that time, The Video Game History Foundation released a Christmas-themed commercial for Army Men: Sarge’s Heroes, one of the games I was covering.
This led to an intriguing conversation with VGHF’s director, Frank Cifaldi, about a collection of materials they had just acquired from Michael Mendheim, the creative director behind the Sarge’s Heroes series. By the end of our chat, my inbox was overflowing with documents on the development of the Army Men series, significantly broadening the scope of my project. Then, in late summer 2024, Frank invited me to join him on an episode of The Video Game History Hour to discuss these games with Mendheim himself, granting me even deeper insights.
This particular episode of 3rd Party 64 includes clips from that interview along with findings from the documents provided by The Video Game History Foundation. The depth of coverage on these games would have been impossible without their invaluable work.
There’s even more to explore! As I dug deeper, the wealth of information on Army Men: Sarge’s Heroes became too much to condense into just one video. So, we decided to create a separate video highlighting what I found to be the nine most intriguing, previously undocumented facts from my research. You can find this video on The Video Game History Foundation’s YouTube channel.
