As I alluded to yesterday, there was a significant amount of gaming on my end this year. Choosing just one Game of the Year for the Nintendo Switch, along with a few honorable mentions, wasn’t feasible. Gimmick! 2

Can you believe it’s been over three decades since Gimmick! launched on the Famicom, Japan’s version of the NES? Fast forward to today, and Gimmick! 2 revisits this classic, promising that notorious NES level of difficulty. Thankfully, as Bitwave Games’ CEO Niklas Istenes shared in our interview, this sequel has been cleverly retooled for a broader audience.

The magic of Gimmick! lies in a unique star summoned by Yumetaro, harnessing weight and momentum for its platforming mechanics. When it debuted on the Famicom (and later a limited NES release in Scandinavia), this physics-centric title was groundbreaking. In this sequel, the star isn’t just for combat and defense. Dungeons of Dreadrock 2 – The Dead King’s Secret

This adventure begins with a delightful tune setting the stage. Previously, you descended into dungeons searching for a lost brother. Now, step into the role of the mysterious wizard with a mission to find the Crown of Wisdom in Dreadrock Mountain’s perilous caverns. An intriguing twist: this sequel runs parallel to the events of the first game, presenting a fresh perspective on familiar territory.

Ynglet

Embark on a visually and musically captivating journey with Ynglet. After a transformative explosion, you guide a worm-like entity through a series of escalating challenges. Lords of Exile

Channel your inner warrior in Lords of Exile, an action-packed tribute to the original Castlevania trilogy with some Ninja Gaiden flair. Taking on Gabriel’s quest of vengeance through eight sprawling levels, this game delivers linear yet thoroughly satisfying 2D action that honors its classic inspirations.
