Ubisoft, the well-known French publisher, is reportedly working on a new battle royale game designed to challenge the popular Apex Legends. According to Insider Gaming, the game, currently going by the codename Scout, seems to draw quite a bit of inspiration from Respawn and EA’s successful franchise. Interestingly, its concept art once served as a thumbnail for the project, highlighting its close resemblance to Apex Legends. Apparently, there are even characters in the game that closely mirror those in Apex Legends. This project has been underway for a while now.
The strategy behind this move appears to be Ubisoft’s belief that it can attract players away from Apex Legends, a game that Electronic Arts has noted is experiencing a financial dip. A source involved with the project mentioned, “The objective seems to be to tap into the declining player base of Apex and the idea from Ubisoft executives is that there’s room for another hero-based Battle Royale in the market.”
This isn’t Ubisoft’s first attempt at cracking the free-to-play battle royale market. In 2020, they launched Hyperscape, though it only lasted a mere 18 months before being discontinued. This latest development follows closely after Ubisoft pulled the plug on their free-to-play shooter, XDefiant, which is set to end in 2024.
Meanwhile, fans of Apex Legends have something to look forward to, as a new 2.0 version is reportedly in the pipeline, anticipated to release sometime after April 2026.
