The latest project from Funselektor, the creators behind Absolute Drift and Art of Rally, is a highly anticipated off-roading title called “Over the Hill.” Alongside Strelka Games, they’ve just unveiled their first gameplay trailer during the Triple-i Initiative indie showcase, setting the stage for some exciting new adventures.
When it was first announced back in January, “Over the Hill” promised to take Funselektor’s signature stylish and minimalist art style and apply it to off-roading experiences reminiscent of SnowRunner, minus the tedious business of towing trailers. Mind you, that’s the vehicular kind of trailer, as the developers seem eager to experiment with their game trailers in fresh and exciting ways.
The gameplay trailer has already sparked significant interest, amassing over 200,000 wishlists on Steam, even though the release date remains a mystery. The game promises all the mud, winching, and terrain challenges you’d expect—all without the hefty maintenance costs of a Land Rover that’s constantly on the brink of some mechanical disaster.
In “Over the Hill,” you can team up with up to three friends, embarking on picturesque off-road trips in vintage vehicles from the ’60s to the ’80s. This aligns perfectly with Funselektor’s flair for retro motoring experiences. As you venture through varied landscapes, from sunny trails to snowy paths, you’ll get a taste of every season and weather condition.
One thing they’ve kept simple is the game’s UI. The mini-map looks delightfully old-school, much like an Ordnance Survey map your dad might have spread out across the car dashboard when lost during a countryside escape. The winching system is demonstrated from the driver’s viewpoint, echoing mechanics familiar to fans of SnowRunner—it’s all about selecting a point and reeling yourself in.
Beyond the gameplay mechanics, there’s a sneak peek at vehicle customization options, ensuring your ride is ready to tackle any terrain. And for those memorable moments—whether reaching a mountaintop or capturing a comically unfortunate roll—you’ll find a photo mode to preserve those adventures for posterity.
