Whoa, okay, so here’s the thing. There’s like this whole swarm of VR shooters nowadays, all trying to capture the vibe of Counter-Strike. But soon—brace yourself—you’ll be diving into the actual thing on Quest and Pico headsets. No joke, it’s happening, thanks to this modding gang, Team Beef. Why Team Beef? Who knows, guess it’s catchy.
Anyway, these folks have already tackled tons of retro games for VR. Think Tomb Raider, Duke Nukem 3D, Prey, and even Quake 4. Totally an unexpected lineup, but hey, whatever floats their boat, right? So now they’re on a roll with this unofficial, yet seriously cool, VR port for Counter-Strike 1.6. Yeah, that version—the Half-Life spin-off that got released on Steam way back when y2k was a thing.
Apparently, this whole project rides on the latest version of Xash3D FWGS. It’s basically a fancy engine, I guess, that gels with Valve’s old-school GoldSrc engine. And I don’t even know what half of that means, but it sounds majorly technical. They’ve teamed up with this multiplatform client made by Velaron, whoever that is.
Oh, and get this—there’s cross-play and something they call “easy server creation directly from inside VR.” Sounds neat, huh? Plus, they’re aiming to make it fully motion-controlled so you can flail around like a madman while playing.
As for when it’s out? Well, supporters on Team Beef’s Patreon supposedly get early access “real soon.” Whatever that means. They’re even teasing us with a little prototype clip, although, full disclosure, it’s not showing the 6DoF motion stuff yet.
So, hold on to your headsets, I guess. Counter-Strike in VR is gonna be a thing. Whether it’s brilliant or bonkers, well, we’ll just have to wait and see.
